Workshop on promoting students independent thinking and encouraging them to actively share
their thoughts and opinions

Workshop on promoting students independent thinking and encouraging them to actively share their thoughts and opinions
Lessons where teachers ask questions and have to urge students to give answers are not uncommon. Asking questions is a way to understand how much students understand from the lesson, and to carry out an interactive lesson where both teacher and students actively participate.
However, some teachers consulted the Center for Teaching and Learning about students question answering in a classroom. According to them, it happens quite common that students are hesitant to share their opinions when they are prompted to speak.
Therefore, we invited Professor Yutaka KIMURA (a teacher of Humanities faculty from the University of Shiga Prefecture) as a guest speaker and will hold a workshop on promoting independent thinking and activeness of students, making appropriate questions that encourage students to express their opinions, and explaining what types of questions are most effective in a classroom.
