Organized by Center for Teaching and Learning, IAGE, Hokkaido University and Hokkaido FD/SD Council

The Center for Teaching and Learning at Hokkaido University has been collaborating with the university’s Harassment Counseling Office to hold various workshops each year aimed at harassment prevention and creating a better working environment. This year, we are pleased to welcome Mr. Naohiro Sato, a counselor from the Harassment Counseling Office, as a lecturer for the session below.

In some cases of academic harassment consultations, students have expressed concerns such as, “I cannot trust my professor” or “I have lost faith in my academic advisor.” Such remarks often indicate a lack of trust between faculty and students, which can increase the risk of academic harassment. On the other hand, when trust is well-established, students feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns, enabling faculty to detect and prevent harassment early. Thus, building and maintaining trust between faculty and students is crucial in preventing academic harassment.

Using the “ABI Model” that focuses on three elements of trust—Ability, Benevolence, and Integrity—this workshop will explore the communication strategies faculty can employ to foster trustful relationships with students.

Recommended for those who:

・want to learn appropriate measures to avoid academic harassment
・wish to acquire specific communication methods for building trustful relationships with students

This program focuses on:

・Deepening understanding of the characteristics and background of academic harassment
・Learning about the "ABI Model" for building trust between faculty and students
・Reflecting on faculty behaviors and approaches that positively or negatively impact trust-building with students
