With universities attracting an increasing number of overseas students, Japanese Higher Education faces globalization on an unprecedented scale. These changes create the need for clarification of commonly used teaching methods to take account of the diverse cultural and educational backgrounds of students. The need for interaction in an international environment, whether in the classroom, in daily life, or when doing research in the laboratory, brings new communication challenges. Therefore, knowledge of intercultural communication becomes essential to build better relationships with peers, avoid common cultural misunderstandings, and support effective collaboration across cultures.
This seminar will familiarize you with some basic concepts, principles, and techniques for communicating effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. It will also allow you to broaden your understanding of intercultural communication from various contexts. For example, you will learn some strategies for facilitating dialogue in your class and giving/receiving feedback effectively across cultures.
Through collaboration with other participants, you will be able to discuss and search for solutions to intercultural issues, ensure that your class is inclusive, and consider every enrolled student’s individual circumstances.
