With the increasing emphasis on culturally relevant teaching practices, incorporating intercultural skills into the teaching curriculum is now vital. As Japanese universities internationalize and the number of foreign students and instructors rises, fostering intercultural competencies among students is crucial in preparing them for the global workplace. Policies like the “Hokkaido University Global Vision 2040” exemplify the university’s strategic vision for sustained internationalization. This seminar aims to provide educators with tools and insights to cultivate students who are adaptable, open-minded, and capable of understanding diverse perspectives, thereby fostering an inclusive international campus environment.
By attending this seminar, participants will receive hands-on knowledge to enhance their courses and support the inclusive internationalization of the campus. We will introduce the concept of Intercultural Communication Competencies and showcase real-life examples of integrating these skills into classroom activities. Moreover, we will discuss how Intercultural Competencies can be used to address challenges such as Culture Shock, etc. Through collaborative efforts, such as Critical Incidents, participants will simulate intercultural misunderstandings, arming them with practical strategies to handle future intercultural encounters effectively.
