The rapid proliferation of generative AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, since late 2022 has undeniably transformed the landscape of university education. While much of the discussion has centered on whether to restrict or permit student use of AI, the more crucial challenge lies in a fundamental shift in educators' perspectives. It's time for us to proactively consider how to strategically integrate generative AI into our pedagogical design and curriculum development.

This introductory lecture, part of a comprehensive package training program organized by the Center for Teaching and Learning at Hokkaido University, will explore the vast educational potential and inherent limitations of cutting-edge generative AI technologies. We'll delve into the pivotal question of "Exclusion or Design?" and provide practical frameworks for educational redesign. This includes strategies for stepwise utilization, purpose-specific integration, and cultivating essential student AI literacy.

This lecture also serves as an essential gateway to our three follow-up hands-on workshops:

  1. MyGPT Design
  2. NotebookLM Utilization
  3. Adapting to the Deep Research Era

Our aim extends beyond mere information dissemination; we want to empower educators to critically assess and strategically leverage generative AI in their teaching practice.

It's crucial to note that this program does not advocate for the mandatory integration of AI into all courses. Instead, its core objective is to challenge educators to reimagine lesson design in an era of rapidly evolving generative AI. We believe that even if participants ultimately decide not to integrate AI into their specific courses, as long as that decision is rooted in a thoughtful, redesigned pedagogical approach, it represents a valuable and intended outcome of this training.

Recommended for those who:

・Are considering incorporating generative AI into their classes
・Want to develop institutional guidelines for generative AI
・Wish to stay informed about recent developments in generative AI
