Organized by Center for Teaching and Learning, IAGE, Hokkaido University and Hokkaido FD/SD Council
This follow-up seminar is designed for participants who have previously attended the “Business English for Administrative Purposes” training hosted by the Center. It aims to further enhance English communication skills by focusing on differences in communication styles when conducting business in English as a common language. Additionally, it introduces ways to choose efficient expressions in English by utilizing “Plain Japanese,” which facilitates better understanding.
Particular attention will be given to addressing unconscious stereotypes when interacting with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, such as international students, colleagues, faculty members, and researchers. Practical skills will be developed through role-playing scenarios based on specific situations in daily administrative tasks, using simple English rooted in “Plain Japanese.”
Lastly, there will be an opportunity for participants to share their experiences, challenges, and strategies related to managing internationalization tasks. Learning about practices in other institutions and disciplines can provide new perspectives. This seminar will serve as a valuable opportunity for improving English proficiency to promote smoother internationalization efforts in your organization.
After the seminar, there will be time for questions and networking with the lecturer, which we encourage you to join.
Recommended for those who:
・Want to conduct business in English more smoothly
・Wish to learn considerations when working with individuals from different cultural backgrounds
This program focuses on:
・Understanding strategies to indicate your level of comprehension while gauging your counterpart's understanding
・Experiencing what kind of communication style "Plain Japanese" represents
・Enhancing English proficiency by incorporating "Plain Japanese" into workplace expressions
