How do university faculty members perceive generative AI, including ChatGPT? We often hear voices saying, “We are not particularly worried, as it hasn't yet reached the stage where it can be effectively used for class reports.”
However, in the society that university students will enter after graduation, generative AI is already being utilized in many fields. Even if there are some inaccurate aspects, shouldn't students learn the correct ways to interact with it while they're still in university? Furthermore, both the university faculty and staff cannot ignore the constantly evolving generative AI.
In this series, we have previously covered how university faculty and staff utilize generative AI in their educational and research activities through various relatable examples. In the fifth session, we will shift our focus to how university students are leveraging generative AI in their own learning. We have invited two students from Hokkaido University to share their experiences. Each student will present for 20 minutes, followed by a 20-minute discussion, including a Q&A session.

Amane Mizuno (Student, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hokkaido University)

This presentation is intended to provide faculty and staff with an update on how undergrads are using generative AI.
In response to the recent rapid development of generative AI, I have been trying to figure out how to use generative AI to keep up with the times. In this presentation, I will share with you the current status of my use of generative AI in (1) studying for exams, (2) research activities, (3) job hunting, and (4) daily life, as well as how to gather information about generative AI.
I hope this presentation will help you in your use of generative AI and in dealing with students.

So Inoue (Student, Faculty of Economics and Business, Hokkaido University)

In the process of writing my thesis using Generative AI, I incorporated two main methods. First, I received explanations of the material using ChatGPT to summarize and verify previous research and to confirm that my interpretation was correct. I also used Notion to organize the previous studies so that I could quickly refer to the relevant content. Next, in structuring the paper, I also strengthened the logic by creating sentences based on suggestions from ChatGPT and asking for objections. In this way, generative AI helped improve the quality and efficiency of the paper.
By the way, this abstract was also written by the generative AI.
